Kafuku (Hidetoshi Nishijima) is a renowned stage actor. The “Scheherazade” segment forms the prologue of Hamaguchi’s Drive My Car, with the remainder of the movie taking place two years after Kafuku’s wife’s death. The idea that all the world’s a stage and we are merely players. Hamaguchi’s inclusion of this story isn’t obvious at first, but he finds relations to “Drive My Car” in ways Murakami might not have. The story she tells him that forms the crux of Murakami’s tale is her as a high school student breaking into her crush’s bedroom to steal small effects and leave something in return. The story is “Scheherazade,” about a social worker’s weekly visits to a man shut inside his home to bring him books, groceries, and albums have sex with him, and then tell him long, elaborate stories. Rysûke Hamaguchi’s cinematic adaptation of Haruki Murakami’s short story, “Drive My Car,” opens with another Murakami short story, also taken from the collections Men Without Women. I had to pay attention because there were so many clues that drove this storyline and so many omg, no way moments. It’s hard to write a review and keep it spoiler free but suffice it to say, if you’re a fan of this series like me, you’re going to love the ending of Brantley and Saint’s story. I was left with my jaw dropping, mouthing WTF as I feverishly turned pages. At times, I had sensory overload and whiplash. I love their journey.īut as with all TEKC, there is sooooo much happening. And, though I love Bishop and Nate, Brantley just had me a little more. His character intrigued me from the start. It is everything I hoped and more.īrantley and Saint are my favorite in this series.
